Backing the Truck Into Tight Spaces

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

John Joseph Flood asked:

The articles about backing a big rig into a small space are so very important to every driver. Once you know how to make a truck go straight then that part becomes easy. When it comes to backing then it gets a little hairy. If you’re already a driver you are used to it and probably didn’t think much of it. Think back to the first time you got in the truck to back it up.

How far do you spin your wheel when you start backing What do you do when there is a tractor on both sides when you are backing into a tight spot How do you handle it when there isn’t enough room to get the truck in straight

Now those are some tough questions that you’ll make the final decision about. Here are some pointers that I use. If it is just too tight then you will probably be better off to wait. Some warehouses only have a few loaders working anyway so they are going to get to you any faster if you back in right away or wait until the door opens.

If there is enough room that you can pull forward enough to get the tractor and trailer straight then it is real simple to back in and you should go ahead and do that. You will be able to relax and get some rest and you will also avoid some other driver jumping in line and taking your place at the door.

The tractor on both sides of you can make some drivers very nervous. Think about how long it will take to call police, your company, and the other driver’s company and then wait until the insurance companies get involved. Don’t be shy about getting out of your truck and look to see how you are doing. I personally don’t like to listen to others on the CB when backing because if you hit them it is still your fault. Be careful check out the area behind and take your time because it will save you time in the long run.

I went to this warehouse in Southern California to pick up a load and the dock was full of container trailers. You know the ones that are loaded on to ships. The lot was packed and there was absolutely no way to get the tractor lined up in any good position. I tried and tried and when I finally got the trailer into the hole my legs were shaking from pushing the clutch so much.

When it was all said and done the load I was picking up was in another warehouse on a different street. There was so much room at that dock that I had nothing to line my trailer on and that sometimes is worse than having to tight of a spot. It was a bad day.

All you can do is practice, take your time, don’t get nervous and get out and look.

Mobile Auto Detailing and Truck Washing Combination Businesses

Lance Winslow asked:

If you own a mobile car wash or auto detailing business then perhaps you have considered what to do in the Winter Time where you live when it is downpouring rain or totally covered in snow. It is rather hard to detail cars in the snow and no one wants a car wash if God is doing it for free or if you are just going to spray snow off the car and turn it to ice. After all the last thing a property management company wants to see is a portable ice maker in their parking lot and people slip sliding away to the local slip and fall lawyer with paper work in hand for the courthouse the next day, that is for sure.

Recently a gentleman told me; I know a few dozen Landscape companies that have trucks, equipment and for a small fee, they are out on the road with clean trucks and making a good impression. I also know of two general contractors that have their trucks detailed at least once a year if not more. I can see the slow time would be the winter, but we do have a large garage that we can work out of if there are clients that need these services in the winter months.

Yes, these types of small businesses have lots of vehicles they make Excellent customers too. Fleet truck washing can definitely help an auto detailing or car washing business get thru the Winter Months and stay business and this makes a lot of sense. Contractors and Landscape business all need to keep their trucks clean, good points all of them. Well then, perhaps you should consider this in 2006?

What Name? – Truck Manufacturers

Dani Mer asked:

When you’re thinking about purchasing a truck you will probably already have fixed your budget and named your price. But what name brand should you choose? If you are looking to buy a truck, or simply investigating the many different manufacturers of trucks, it may come as a surprise to you to hear that maker names you would normally associate with luxury cars make trucks as well. A case in point is Mercedes Benz – far more often thought to be amongst the kingpins in lavishness, the company also has a mercantile vehicles division.

Size matters. And so does shape and style. Trucks, of course, come in many different shapes and sizes, not to mention price brackets. Before purchasing you really need to have a clear plan of what the main use of the vehicle will be. While some trucks really do feature all the bells, lights and whistles your heart could desire, it may be that for practical purposes you might want to opt for something slightly more utilitarian. Unless you are entering competitions or into the more sporting side of trucking, then these highly ornamental, and very striking, vehicles mightn’t be the best choice for you. They can also cost in the $40,000 region.

Then there’s the question of budget. If you need to economize, avoid purchasing retail. Buying wholesale can save you money, and if you’re running a business and need the truck for commercial purposes you shouldn’t have any trouble setting up a business account with the manufacturer which will afford you benefits.

We all have our load to bear, as they say, but how much can your truck carry? Its capacity in terms of how much you can actually get into the vehicle is also something that you’ll need to mull over if you want the vehicle for work purposes – the manufacturer’s stipulations should take account of the cubic footage of storage and the maximum load weight too.

What does the term truck mean to you? Depending where you live, the term truck might mean different things. In the United Kingdom, for instance, the term truck isn’t normally used to describe four wheel drive vehicles like standard land or range rovers, whereas in the USA the term seems to cover a wider range of vehicles.

OK, you can’t wait to get on the road and get trucking, so to speak. But take time to read any small print. Again, checking the manufacturer’s specifications is important; as for some vehicles drivers are required to hold special licenses, if the truck itself falls into the heavy goods vehicle category (HGV). HGV’s cannot be driven on standard drivers licenses so to make certain you stay on the right side of the law please do check what specifically applies to your vehicle. Also, some areas state that drivers be over a certain age to drive such vehicles and even qualify to hold HGV licenses. Vehicle licensing organisations will be able to tell you which category your vehicle falls into and which type of license is required.

Personalize That Wrangler With Top Jeep Accessories

Matthew Rimcrest asked:

It’s a jeep thing; even if you don’t own a jeep, you know of the cult that surrounds the name. From spunky beach-town cruisers to rock crawling monsters, Jeeps are without a doubt the most capable and modifiable vehicles on the planet. If you’re curious about the different paths you can take with your jeep, then this guide is for you.

Let’s say you just picked up a canary yellow 4-door jeep from the local dealer. Heck, you probably got a great deal on it, considering the financial trouble that Chrysler is facing. You got the basic package, avoiding any over-priced dealer add-ons, but there are a couple things you are going to need to make the new Wrangler compliment your lifestyle.

First things first, get a top for it! Most Jeeps come without a roof, so unless you live on a warm tropical island that never sees any rain, you’ll need something to cover it up. There are a few different options and your choice will be driven the local climate. If you live in an area with 4 seasons, from sunshine to snowfall, you’ll want probably want a hard top. Jeep hard tops have better insulation and offer better vehicle security, but can be cumbersome to remove and store. If winters aren’t too harsh or you don’t drive that much in the winter, a soft top can suffice. Jeep soft tops are a better choice for most people as they can be removed by one person, are easily stored and offer fairly good protection from the elements. If you live in a climate that sees rainfall a few days of the year and are not worried about thieves stealing things out of your Jeep, a bikini top is your best choice. Jeep bikini tops share similar form and function to their bathing suit cousins; they offer maximum exposure while providing a little protection to those vital areas you don’t want to get sunburned. They are easy to store and even easier to install; tie one on and you’re ready for a day of fun in the sun.

If you choose to forgo a jeep top, you’ll definitely want to pick up a set of jeep seat covers. The sun can be a cruel mistress and her UV rays can destroy your seats in just a few short years. If you bought your Jeep used and the seats came sans-fabric, you might want to consider replacing them with an aftermarket set of jeep seats, specially designed to keep you and your occupants planted inside the cab. If your jeep came without doors, do yourself a favor and avoid a lawsuit by getting a pair of tubular jeep doors; they look cool, protect you from falling out and let you see any rocks that your tires might be grappling with. Speaking of tires, jeep suspension kits are a must have if you plan to do any amount off-roading.

From front and rear diffs to lift kits and fender flares meant to house 35″ mudders, the options are near limitless. If you plan to go on some big excursions, make sure to have a proper spare tire mount with an extra can of gas. The last thing you want is to be stranded in the wilderness stuck in a rut somewhere with a flat. If you do get stuck, at least make sure to have some tunes jamming to break the silence while you wait for backup. But let’s face it; Jeep did a half-arse job with their choice of stereo equipment.

Those 4″ dash speaker just don’t cut it if you drive a vehicle that is an open-air roof 99% of the time. You’re going to need some decent watts if you want to rock out proper. Jeep sound bars are a great way to direct crisp audio to your ears while utilizing the roll bar as a choice mounting location. Toss a sub in the back and you’re ready to walk up that Stairway to Heaven.

Information About the Most Frequent Auto Repairs

Otto Ingrid asked:

If you’ve been a car owner for any length of time you are aware of the many costs that come along with owing a car. Some of the more obvious ones are your monthly car payments, insurance premiums, and other expenses such as gasoline which is now a very large expense, parking fees if you work in your downtown area and toll fees if you live far away from your work place.

It has been proven that there are some car repairs are more common than others. You can avoid some of these costly repairs by keeping your car in running shape by having some of the following checked out on a regular basis: your brake system; your cooling and heating systems; your electronic system or computer system depending on how new your car is and your suspension system; your carburetor system; your transmission and rear axle; and the condition of your tires which includes the pressure and the tread. Also, you should take your car in regularly for an oil change where they will not only change your oil and oil filter, but they will check your hoses for wear, make sure all of your fluids are at the correct levels, and sometimes they will even check your air conditioning system and your radiator to see if it needs flushing, and also they will check and replace the cars filters if necessary,

You should also take you car in for a tune-up on a regular scheduled basis. Taking your car in for regular maintenance is a must because if your car is not taken care of properly you could be faced with costly repairs caused from neglect. These repairs will most likely cost much more than if you had the preventative maintenance done on your car on a regular basis. Remember to ask the repair shop to call you with an estimate if they find anything needing repair before they start doing the work on your vehicle and also tell them not to do any extra work without your consent. This could save you a lot of grief and money too.

If money is tight in your household there are a few ways to save money such as joining a car pooling group to and from work. If there is not already a car pooling group at your work place, then you could start one. Another was to save money is to take public transportation if you have that available to you in your city. Either one of these types of transportation can save you money not just on gasoline but also on your auto insurance. You insurance company bases part of your premium on the miles you drive and by lowering them substantially you will see your premium decrease. If you really need to lower your auto insurance premium even more you might try going on the internet and checking out whether another insurance company can offer you a better deal on your car insurance. Premium rates change from day to day so it is a good idea to check the internet every once in awhile.

Useful Car Buying Tips

Francis Murphy asked:

Analyze carefully what the criteria you are looking for in a car; is it the look, comfort, price, safety, reliability or status? After finalizing this, it will be much easier for you to narrow down the specific model/(s) that you are interested in. It is also advantageous to search around the websites for useful car buying tips. Tabled below append some good car buying tips for novice in car buying world.

Getting a Used Car:

1. Visit the second hand car dealers nearby which you have received good feedbacks from those whom have deal with before. Check out the car center personally. If you have spotted any car of your liking, check out the age, the mechanical condition, the engine, vehicle mileage, the interior condition and the previous owners of the car.

2. You may even spot a used car for sale through the newspaper or online website. Call up the contact number provided and arrange for an appointment to check out the car yourself personally.

3. Buying from a private seller carries higher risk as the mechanical condition of the car may be unknown and hidden; it is always advisable to have your own mechanic to inspect the vehicle before finalizing the purchase. There are unscrupulous sellers whom will not disclose the problems but try to cover them up, hoping to pass them on when selling the car to you.

4. Request for a complete history of the vehicle (service and maintenance records, accident records, wear and tear records, outstanding liens and its previous owners) . This will provide some good ideas on how the car has been maintained, and what are the potential risks in advance.

Getting a New Car:

5. The best time to make the purchase: December. Car dealers will cut down car prices to attract buyers as people tend to receive annual bonus end of year, and their spending power is high then. July and September, where car dealers sell off cars at lower price to allow space for new car models.

6. Specify your budget. This will definitely help to narrow the choices which you can select from.

7. Check out the best financing deals from at least 3 reputable financing institutions before you decide for one.

8. Check out the auto rebates on new cars which you can take advantage of. Each different car model carries different rebate amount and policy for their new car.

Insight to the 2010 BMW X3

Geof Ryan asked:

BMW X3 has been one of the most popular compact SUVs from the house of BMW throughout the world, which happens to be the successor of BMW X5. The initial discontentment amongst the public was its ordinary front fascia that did not live up to the expectations of most of the critics and sport enthusiasts.

However, ever since 2005, the BMW X3 has been one of the sensational offerings in its market in all the aspects. Now, the 2010 BMW X3 is ready to be rolled out into the market with more power, stupendous off-road capabilities, improvized looks, the infamous xDrive, and much more.

With a slightly softer suspension, N52 inline 6-cylinder engine, and updates in the xDrive system, the 2010 BMW X5 looks like a tremendous SAV on the offer, and probably it is going to set new standards for the current generation sport utility and sport activity vehicles.

The sporty BMW X3 Cross Country versions will also be on the offer, which will be marketed with 2.9 liter inline-6 twin turbocharged diesel engine and several extra capabilities exclusively for the rally raid competition.

In terms of architectural changes, there’s nothing new as such, though the new X3 is going to be sturdier than its predecessors for sure.

Overall, the 2010 BMW is going to be a top performer in its segment, but it is definitely going to be a costly affair too. The pre-launch bookings have started and just like every other BMW release, the new X3 has received overwhelming response.
